]]> The 2022 Scientific Consensus Statement on the effects of land-based activities on Great Barrier Reef water quality and ecosystem condition was released on 1 August 2024. C2O Consulting led the design, development and delivery of the 2022 Scientific Consensus Statement, a process that involved more than 200 experts from Australia and overseas. The 2022 Scientific Consensus Statement is the most rigorous and comprehensive of its kind, and the largest environmental project ever undertaken on the Great Barrier Reef to adopt systematic, evidence-based methods to review the evidence. The evidence base included over 4,000 publications. The 2022 Scientific Consensus Statement was jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland governments. ]]> The Australian Chief Scientist, Dr Cathy Foley has recently released a paper Trust in Science: Clarifying the distinctions between research integrity, research quality, excellence, and impact. In the paper, Dr Foley explains the differences between integrity and quality, and highlights how both aspects underpin scientific excellence and impact. The paper comes about following Dr Foley’s concerns “that in debates involving science — especially those focused on contentious issues — the integrity of the science is sometimes wrongly questioned.”

Dr Foley describes the update of the 2022 Scientific Consensus Statement (SCS) on land use impacts on Great Barrier Reef water quality and ecosystem condition (a joint Australian and Queensland Government project) which is being led by the C2O Consulting team as “an exemplar of how to bring science to policy”. The SCS process has been designed to build trust and confidence in the science through early engagement with a wide range of stakeholders and end-users and follows a robust, transparent, and structured evidence-based method which is underpinned by an extensive independent peer review process. As part of the process, the Australian and Queensland Chief Scientists are providing oversight to ensure the methods used to develop the SCS are rigorous and follow best practice.

]]> C2O led a climate change vulnerability assessment for the Arafura and Timor Seas Ecosystem Action – ATSEA – 2 Programme. The Arafura and Timor Seas region is shared by Indonesia, Timor Leste, Australia, and Papua New Guinea. The results of the assessment have now been published in the journal Climatic Change “Climate change implications for the Arafura and Timor Seas region: assessing vulnerability of marine systems to inform management and conservation”. The paper identified regions where shallow coral reef, seagrass and mangrove habitats are highly vulnerable to climate change and assessed the vulnerability of important marine species in the region. The results identified drivers of vulnerability, such as poor habitat condition, overfishing and ​illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU), limited formal management, and low connectivity. In addition, the study identified local actions that are needed to support adaptation and minimise climate change vulnerability.

The program provides students with the opportunity to gain professional experience in the scientific industry, apply their existing knowledge and skills to real world situations.
